During this weekend retreat, working both indoors and outdoors when possible, Rose Ann Preston and Christian Hanschug will give a practical introduction to key ideas and techniques practiced in Tai Chi, Qigong, Taoism, the I Ching and Falun Gong.

Tai Chi is an internal Chinese martial art practiced for defence training, health benefits and meditation. It draws on Chinese theories of the body, particularly Daoist internal alchemy of qi energy. It is considered an "internal" martial art which focuses on developing the qi. Tai Chi also adopts the Daoist ideals of softness overcoming hardness, whilst also retaining Daoist ideas of spiritual self-cultivation.  It is a kind of moving meditation that allows us to let go of the self and experience no-mind and spontaneity.

Qigong is a system of coordinated body-posture and movement, breathing, and meditation used for the purposes of health, spirituality, and martial-arts training. With roots in Chinese medicine, philosophy, and martial arts, Qigong practice typically involves moving meditation, coordinating slow-flowing movement, deep rhythmic breathing, and a calm meditative state of mind. People practice qigong throughout China for recreation, exercise, relaxation, preventive medicine, self-healing, alternative medicine, meditation, self-cultivation, and training for martial arts.

Taoism is the Chinese tradition which emphasises living in harmony with the Dao (‘the Way’). The Dào is a mysterious and deep principle that is the source, pattern and substance of the entire universe.

The I Ching is an ancient and classic Chinese text which developed in stages over the course of several hundred years to become the basis for divination practice across China and the whole of the Far East, eventually became key to Western understanding of Chinese philosophical thought.

Falun Gong aspires to enable the practitioner to ascend spiritually through moral rectitude and the practice of a set of exercises and meditation. The three stated tenets of the belief are truthfulness, compassion and forbearance. Together these principles are regarded as the fundamental nature of the cosmos, the criteria for differentiating right from wrong, and are held to be the highest manifestations of the Tao.

Please bring loose clothing suitable for gentle exercise as well as indoor and outdoor shoes and clothing.
