Active Imagination will be the method we use to work with and explore unconscious aspects of ourselves - views that are concealed from our everyday minds. The group’s exploratory work will align itself with both the ideas of Carl Jung, the esoteric tradition and the work of Tan y Garth’s mentor Eugene Halliday and the form of exercises that he encouraged.  Both these teachers considered this work to be the Perennial Philosophy that consistently emerges from tradition systems throughout the world and is embedded in all the major religions.
The title itself comes from some of Carl Jung’s later writings focusing on the need he saw in this modern world for an individually achieved ethical and spiritual integrity, a process which meant in his words, a self aware ‘individuation’, formed in direct opposition to the mass psychology that he saw generated by global political and scientific materialism.
To Jung, this situation could only be solved, and we could only be saved, as ‘unique’ individuals by us individually opening up to our own ‘religious instinctive attitude’ and exploring our inner human reservoir of symbolic meaning.  This unique symbolic individuality Eugene Halliday would call Soul, and it’s conscious opening up and exploration was our real work in life. In this way our very life becomes our spiritual art. He put it this way;
‘The great Religious Contemplatives in their investigations of the depths of the human soul have found forms of mental activity quite different from those of the waking state.  These so-called ‘subjective’ phenomena of the psyche, below the waking conscious level are found in various forms that recur so often that it becomes clear that they must have some very special significance.  These special forms we call ‘Symbols.’
