MORE ABOUT THE RETREAT

International Yoga Day and World Music Day fall on the same day on the 21st of June, the summer solstice, a special day when the Earth is at maximum tilt, causing the Sun to travel its longest path and give the Earth its longest hours of daylight. To celebrate this we are bringing together the two themes of Yoga and Music into a Nada Yoga retreat, outdoors in nature over the prior weekend.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.

Gospel of John 1 v1-3

The Sanskrit words Nada and Yoga mean “the flow of sound” and “union” respectively. Nada Yoga therefore is the yoga of sound. The process of union of the individual mind with cosmic consciousness through the flow of sounds.

This ancient Indian metaphysical system is a philosophical system, a form of medicine, and a form of Yoga. The system's theoretical and practical aspects are based on the premise that the entire cosmos and all that exists in it, including human beings, consists of vibrations, called nāda and that the energy of vibrations rather than of matter, form the building blocks of the cosmos.

Nada Yoga works as medicine and therapy, helping a person to lead a healthy, happy and balanced life in the world. On the path of Nada Yoga, the body is healed, the mind recovers its balance and the person becomes a fully functional individual, living with a sense of well-being. The benefits of music and sound as a medium to help improve wellbeing are increasingly becoming as well known, practiced and recognised as Yoga is.

This retreat will consist of a series of yoga workshops Yoga and music participation giving participants practical experiences of some of the traditional techniques used in different cultures around the world including; a gong bath sound journey, (a holistic immersion in healing sound waves), Kiritan (a call-and-response style song), vedic chanting, vocal toning, African drumming and dance.

The Gong Bath is a combination of sound healing meditation and transcendent chants to elevate mind body and soul and awaken and ignite your dormant energies. In a sound journey deep relaxation and stress release happens.

Tom has some incredible gongs which will amaze and inspire you plus crystal and Himalayan singing bowls that will awaken mind, body and soul. Sometimes other instruments are used such as chimes, bells, didgeridoo, shamanic drums, Tibetan ritual instruments and many others, to weave a rich tapestry of sacred healing to take you on a profound journey of awakening and self discovery.

Kirtan is a part of yogic practice and is an easy and very accessible way to experience some freedom from the turbulence of the monkey mind. Tom is an experienced Kirtan leader and musician who will lead the Kirtan session and often plays harmonium, guitar, tabla drums and other instruments to create a sacred space to connect with our spiritual essence and create some divine vibes. Kirtan is non-denominational, the Universal language of Spirit, the song of the Soul.

Even if we can’t play an instrument, or sing, somehow, we can connect with rhythms and melodies.

Feel free to bring an instrument, drum, rattle or a song if you would like to but no prior musical ability is required in order to benefit from the weekend.
