In the past few decades psychedelic substances, having been outlawed since the 1960’s, are again being licensed for medical research purposes. They are already hailed as being very effective in both helping cancer patients reduce their fear of death, and in treating addiction to alcohol and tobacco.

As psycho active drugs and substances are again being thought of as opening a portal to deep areas of the mind, this fascinating research can throw a new light on how our minds work. During this weekend we will outline some of the developments coming from this recent research and relate them to older spiritual descriptions of human potential. In particular we will look to see how these ideas relate to other older methods and practises such as meditation in its many forms, breath work, psycho drama and yoga.

Along side a revue of the new research it’s discussion and consideration, time will be allotted throughout the weekend to work without using drugs - other than tea or coffee - to practise older methods and ideas discussed in the talks.

This event is part of our ongoing Perennial Philosophy strand which looks into and beyond the history of the various world ideas that Aldus Huxley and other writers identified as ‘universal’, to explore the nature of similar descriptions of this Ultimate Reality, considering and exploring old and new methods being used to achieve its direct experience. During previous retreats in the series we have looked at Cosmic Consciousness and Mysticism and Meaning.
